Colfax Elevator and Accessibility Project
Last
year 14,000 people attended children’s program,
educational classes and community events at the Colfax
Library (24,000 attended system wide.) Yet, many of our older and
disabled residents could not participate because of our
steep stairway and the lack of an elevator.
Whitman
County Library is progressing well on a plan to upgrade the
building. The proposed renovations, including a
three floor elevator, safer stairway and numerous ADA
modifications, are quite expensive due to extensive use of
cement in the library’s infrastructure.

Changes
to the children’s area are also part of the project.
Using funds collected in memory of young Hayden Klaveano,
we are working with his family to move the children’s area
to
a safer location, with designs reflecting Hayden’s love of
the
outdoors and learning. |

Parent Jeanette Solimine takes daughter Chrissie down the

children's programs and the public meeting area.

Hayden Klaveano, the eager redhead up front, enjoys the
library with his Steptoe classmates. A newly located and safer
children's area will be named in Hayden's memory.

Right:
As many as 200 children use the public meeting area for
programs and events. A new stairway will provide them safer
access while accommodating those currently unable to attend
because there is no elevator.
