In the fall of 2002, Whitman County Library received a sizable
grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and a visit
from its co-founder, Bill Gates. Gates was in attendance to
see his technologies in action and congratulate staff members
on successfully helping the public understand how to use it.

The grant provided 23 computers for public use, each loaded
with the latest in Microsoft programs, research tools and fun
games for kids. Nationwide, the Foundation has given $250 million
dollars for computers in libraries serving low-income populations.

During
the informal visit, Gates hosted a question and answer period
with library staff members. He was curious about the way the
public uses the computers and how technology affects people's
lives. Appreciative staff reported that Mr. Gates was "warm,
friendly, sincere, and just regular guy." |
