Board of Trustees Meeting

Colfax Branch

February 19, 2008

4:00 p.m.


Present:   Rebecca Dickerson, Teresa Myott, Erica Willson, Clancy Pool and Peggy Bryan.

 Teresa Myott, board vice-chair, called the meeting to order at 4:06.

Teresa asked for additions or modifications to the agenda.  Peggy asked approval of the minutes from the last minutes be delayed until Jon Kehne arrives.

 Peggy reviewed the Financial Reports; year end Budget and Account Balances Reports through December 31, 2007.  She reviewed February vouchers #9038-9086 totaling $11,432.54.  Board members signed to authorize payment. 

 Jon Kehne arrived at 4:10.

The Board reviewed the January 2008 meeting minutes.  Jon Kehne made a motion to accept the minutes and Becky Dickerson seconded.  The motion passed. 

Clancy reviewed circulation reports for February.   She reported databases with high usage were Bridges, Ancestry & Heritage Quest with Ask Us 24/7 continuing to be stable.  The circulation statistics showed an increase of 242 in Colfax.  Clancy noted the impact of recent PR releases at Oakesdale and the correlating increase in circulation.    She also discussed the high computer usage in Albion.



Peggy reported on the progress with the Headquarters building upgrades.  The USDA pre-application has been submitted.  Additional financial information, letters of denial for funding requests, architect and environmental information, were competed and returned also.  Peggy indicated the next step after the pre-application would be an interview.  She will keep the board informed of any new developments.

 Peggy reported on recent library donations to the Friends of WCL.  Hayden Klaveano memorial has received $4090 and the David Carpenter Memorial has received $145.  The Klaveano family has in contact with Kristie and Sheri to discuss possible ways to honor Hayden with the memorial. 

 The Friends of WCL Cougar Prize drawing has received $760 with the drawing to be held at the March 25 Friends meeting here in Colfax.  The prize items are on display and can be viewed in the entry way of the library.  Proceeds will benefit the library renovation project.  The Friends of WCL sent a fundraising letter to Colfax businesses and library users to assist with renovation project also. Donations and commitments to the project are $12,430.  She shared a list of donors to the project.  Jon mentioned the financial portion of the USDA application and the project.  Peggy discussed several variables in funding the project and how the package might come together down the road. 


Peggy presented an updated list of the Friends of the Library with 15 new members. 

 Becky discussed Library Legislative Day in Olympia on February 14 & 15, which she and Kristie attended.  They visited Representative Joe Schmick, Senator Mark Schoesler, Steve Hailey’s assistant and four others that serve on the capital project committee.  They were hopeful it would be funded, as we are asking for 15% of the project and not the total amount.  They were well received and were hopeful that the project would be funded. 

Clancy gave an update on the Branches.  She reported that Garfield Branch Manager, Debbie Gilbertson resigned and are in the process of interviewing prospective candidates for the position.  She announced that Jennifer Wall has been visiting all the branches doing Babytime.  She shared a recent article in the Boomerang on Babytime in Palouse.  Becky added that early learning and childhood development was highlighted at Library Legislative Day also.  Clancy indicated that several branch managers will begin Babytime or Jammie Time in their branch. 

Erica Willson, Outreach Educator for WCL, discussed her outreach to schools with the Bridges database.  She did an on-line demonstration of Bridges, as well as an overview of the card catalog, Proquest, ELibrary, Grolier, Testing & Education Reference Center, Chilton Auto Repair, Small Engine Repair, HeritageQuest.  Peggy commended Erica for her outreach and great job at the schools – this has had a very positive impact on WCL.   

Peggy announced that Wired Wednesday’s continue at the library through the month February. 

Peggy announced that Jill Cocking will be traveling to Pasadena for training on the Abraham Lincoln “Forever Free” Grant the library received.  This ALA grant will be displayed at WCL in 2011 for 6 weeks.  Jill will be learning specifics of this project that consists of historical US documents and papers. 

Peggy also mentioned that the Friends of WCL Appreciation Luncheon will be on April 22 at noon.  The board is invited.


The next meeting will be on March 18 at 4 p.m. in Colfax.
