Board of Trustees Meeting

Colfax Branch
December 12, 2007
2:15 p.m.

Present: Leslee Miller, Jon Kehne, Peggy Bryan, and Kristie Kirkpatrick.

Jon Kehne, board chair, called the meeting to order at 2:13. The minutes of the previous meeting were delayed for review at the next meeting.

Peggy reviewed the Financial Reports; Budget Report through November 30, 2007, December Vouchers and Account Balances Reports. She reviewed December vouchers #8933-8983 totaling $23,142.68. Board members signed to authorize payment. Kristie reviewed circulation reports for November, noting that overall circulation was down 112 from the previous year. Colfax circulation increased, but there were large decreases in several branches. There was no report on the database uses for this month, as there are problems in getting the reports. Ask Us 24/7 usage and website usage had strong numbers.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Kristie discussed progress with the Headquarters Building upgrades. She contacted USDA regarding public facilities funding. It appears that once we raise a portion of the funds, USDA can award a percentage of the project as a grant and the remainder of the project is loaned at a 4.2% interest rate. She will have more information by the next meeting.

Jon Kehne gave an update on the Kathy Schluneger estate. Although information is preliminary, he discussed various scenarios of the potential impact to the library. Additional information will be coming from the Attorney handling the estate.

Kristie announced that the City of Garfield completed the window project at the library in Garfield. She expressed her appreciation to the City Council for the improvement to the building.

NEW BUSINESS: Kristie discussed naming of library buildings after people, donors, etc. She mentioned that WCL has no say in the naming of branch library buildings, which are owned by each town. The Garfield Branch is named the Violet McDaniel Memorial Library, the Rosalia Branch is the Alice Porter Memorial Library, and the new St. John Branch building is named for the Denton Family. She asked if a business, organization or person donated a large amount of money for the Hamilton building, should we consider naming it after them. A discussion followed and will continue.

Kristie announced at Whitman County Library was one of five libraries selected statewide to be a digitization site. This grant will digitize historical and genealogy information.

Leslee inquired about publicizing Kathy's donation the library. Jon suggested that we collaborate publicity with the Baptist Church and EWU. Kristie will check with the attorney handling the estate and investigate this further.

The meeting adjourned at 3:48.
