Board of Trustees Meeting
December 12, 2007
Present: Leslee Miller, Jon Kehne, Peggy Bryan, and Kristie
Jon Kehne, board chair, called the meeting to order at 2:13.
The minutes of the previous meeting were delayed for review at
the next meeting.
Peggy reviewed the Financial Reports; Budget Report through
November 30, 2007, December Vouchers and Account Balances
Reports. She reviewed December vouchers #8933-8983 totaling
$23,142.68. Board members signed to authorize payment. Kristie
reviewed circulation reports for November, noting that overall
circulation was down 112 from the previous year. Colfax
circulation increased, but there were large decreases in several
branches. There was no report on the database uses for this
month, as there are problems in getting the reports. Ask Us 24/7
usage and website usage had strong numbers.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Kristie discussed progress with the
Headquarters Building upgrades. She contacted USDA regarding
public facilities funding. It appears that once we raise a
portion of the funds, USDA can award a percentage of the project
as a grant and the remainder of the project is loaned at a 4.2%
interest rate. She will have more information by the next
Jon Kehne gave an update on the Kathy Schluneger estate.
Although information is preliminary, he discussed various
scenarios of the potential impact to the library. Additional
information will be coming from the Attorney handling the

window project at the library in Garfield. She expressed her
appreciation to the City Council for the improvement to the
NEW BUSINESS: Kristie discussed naming of library buildings
after people, donors, etc. She mentioned that WCL has no say in
the naming of branch library buildings, which are owned by each
town. The Garfield Branch is named the Violet McDaniel Memorial
Library, the Rosalia Branch is the Alice Porter Memorial
Library, and the new St. John Branch building is named for the
Denton Family. She asked if a business, organization or person
donated a large amount of money for the Hamilton building,
should we consider naming it after them. A discussion followed
and will continue.
Kristie announced at Whitman County Library was one of five
libraries selected statewide to be a digitization site. This
grant will digitize historical and genealogy information.
Leslee inquired about publicizing Kathy's donation the
library. Jon suggested that we collaborate publicity with the
Baptist Church and EWU. Kristie will check with the attorney
handling the estate and investigate this further.
