Whitman County Library
Board of Trustees Meeting
February 15, 2011
Present: Becky Dickerson, Bob Bates, Jon Kehne, John Aune, Teresa Myott, Kristie Kirkpatrick and Peggy Bryan.
Becky Dickerson, board chair, called the meeting to order at 4:20 p.m. following a tour of the Hamilton Building. She asked if there were any additions or modifications to the agenda.
Kristie asked that the supporter of the month be moved up to 4:30, when our guest arrived.
Virginia Pittman joined the meeting to assist with the presentation of Library Supporter of the Month. Kristie announced that Becky Dickerson was the February supporter of the month. She noted her involvement in library events, promotion, volunteer efforts and support of the Friends of WCL. The minutes of the previous meetings were reviewed. Jon made a motion to accept the minutes and Teresa seconded. The motion carried.
Peggy presented the financial reports. She presented vouchers #11005-11057 totaling $18,033.53 from the general fund. Board members signed to accept payment of the vouchers.
Kristie presented circulation statistics for January. She noted that overall circulation was down slightly. Colfax and Malden circulation increased, while Rosalia, St. John and Endicott circulation dropped. She pointed out that off-site programs and downloadable books were recently added to the circulation report.
Kristie reported that we are still waiting for USDA paperwork before receiving the funds from our loan. WCL has submitted all of the paperwork requested.
Kristie reported that fundraising for the Endicott renovation project is continuing with a raffle. An outdoor fireplace donated by McGregor Company and two $100 Rosauer’s gift cards have been donated for the raffle. The proceeds will benefit this project. Kristie also submitted a proposal to Avista for this project. She announced they want to meet with her next week.
Kristie reported that inmates have been assisting in cleaning the Hamilton Building. She attended an informational .09 Committee meeting. She is considering applying for all or part of this $100,000 Economic Development Grant for the Hamilton Building. The .09 Committee will make their decision by June, at which point those awarded the funds will have one year to complete. She reported that Mark Brown toured the building and will give an estimate on a bare bones renovation to the building, which will be helpful in applying for grants. She also discussed the option of renting the space to local businesses/groups.
The policy updates were delayed until the next meeting.
Kristie announced that the Norma McGregor Community Room dedication and celebration is tentatively scheduled for October 2011. She is working with the McGregor family to coordinate this event, with proceeds earmarked to benefit Norma McGregor Community Room.
Kristie announced that Secretary of State Sam Reed will be at the Colfax Library on March 3. He will tour the newly renovated library and then is scheduled to speak at Rotary lunch. All board members are invited to attend lunch and will be sponsored courtesy of the Friends of WCL; please RSVP to Kristie.
Kristie asked board members to check the on-line library calendar for upcoming events.
Kristie asked the board to pose for a photo to put on our website.
The Friends of WCL newsletter will be mailed soon. The newsletter includes upcoming events and an opportunity to renew membership.
The letter our Board signed to the SEC was signed by a number of other library districts in our state. Hopefully this will be a successful way to curb the regulations being proposed.
With no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 5:15. The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March 15 at 4 p.m. in Colfax.
