Job
seekers in Whitman County will soon have a valuable resource to
assist with resumes, computer skills, online applications, or
career research and employment opportunities. Thanks to a Renew
Washington Grant, Whitman County Library will begin offering
workshops, resources and programs countywide to address the
growing needs of job seekers.
Called Whitman County
Library Occupation Resource Connections, or WORC, this grant of
$48,160 is administered by the Washington State Library and
funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the
Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The
official announcement of the project was made during a
special ceremony at the Spokane Public Library on Nov. 28.
Erica Willson, Whitman County's
teen librarian is certified in Career and Technical Education.
She will serve as WORC coordinator overseeing the 8 month
project. In addition, the library is currently advertising for a
temporary grant funded position whose key responsibilities will
be offering skill-building workshops, teaching online database
usage and to provide valuable customer support. Interested
parties can contact the library for more information.
Besides the countywide
workshops, WORC will bring the valuable online resources WOIS, a
Washington occupational information service to all residents.
Collaborative partners like WorkSource, Community Action and the
Whitman County Health Department will also participate by
offering program information and regional sessions as part of
the WORC project.
Anticipated start date for
WORC project programs and workshops is mid-November. For more
