April 15 - Board tours renovation project

The Whitman County Library Board toured the library renovation project during their April 13 meeting. The Board learned from project architect Larry Kom that crews are approximately 19 days behind schedule as a result of unexpected storm, drain and excavation issues. Crews are working diligently to make up for lost time but re-opening of the library along with the grand re-opening ceremony that was set for June 8 will both be delayed. The Board expects to announce a new opening date within the next month or so. Photo, below left: Jon Kehne inside the elevator on the main floor.

January 20 - Library Board review renovation
Trustees of Whitman County Rural Library were pleased to learn that renovation of the District's Headquarters in the Colfax Library are on track. Board members toured the facility yesterday and met with project manager George Paupst.

Paupst, along with his crew from Blews Construction have been removing thousands of pounds of concrete flooring and supportive T-structures to make way for the library's new stairway and elevator. Making matters more difficult is a very high water table that requires continual pumping in order to dig a five foot deep pit that will serve as the elevator's base.

December 15 - Notes from the Architect's Field Report

Demo of wood framed walls, ceilings and soffits has started. Concrete slab demo on the main floor (adjacent to the book drop) is completed. Demo has commenced on the concrete T floor system. It is anticipated that this work will be completed by next week. Temporary scaffolding is in place to support the structural T system until the new reinforcing and supporting structure can be installed. Contractor has constructed safety barriers around the perimeter of the new opening in the floor. An employee safety course was underway to teach what procedures must be taken when cutting and demoing walls with lead paint.
December 8 Let the demolition begin! Crews from Blews construction remove the center staircase, entry walls and plastic the north end of the building to protect library collections from dust.
